Report
Friday 30th March 1984
On Friday evening, Glip drove the equipment up in Mr Blair’s new Volkswagon minivan, accompanied by Jonathon Foster. We tried for the ferry, but just missed it, so we went up Loch Lomond side, giving a lift to 2 climbers en route. At Lochgoilhead, we found Kris Timmons and father and Rosco there, as well as the expected Kenny, Peter, Ruth, John and Eric. The other leaders were Lesley Tait and Jim, but it's not recorded whether they arrived on Friday or Saturday.
Saturday 31st March
In the morning, Glip took Kris, Rosco and Jonathan for a stroll up the back. We went up the path, across Donich water and up the stream running north up Ben Donich (ending up at GR 211028). This was an interesting gorge-like stream with lots of icicles which we destroyed systematically. We stopped about 2000 feet where the wind was quite cold despite the sun. Kris and Rosco were smashing ice plates from puddles over their heads. On the way down, we played on some rocks then returned across Donich water. Before returning, we collected some wood for pyrography then went back to camp, where we found the leaders had already gone off for lunch.
Once everyone had arrived, the programme started with non-stop cricket played by four teams. There were two games then winners played winners, and losers played losers. This proved highly successful.
After this, bases were held on pyrography, toffee apples, etc etc??. Other programme items were kite making and ???.
The dinner was in full uniform or, in the case of the dads, futuristic or prehistoric scout uniform. As usual, it was very good, but seemed to stop weakly. Some sort of dramatic finish might be called for in future.
The evening finished off with a singsong, which went quite well.
Sunday April 1st
Since this was April 1, April fool’s were the order of the day. John, Eric and Jim had been active during the evening. Kenny’s car lost a wheel and his blanket appeared up a tree. Glip's pojam shirt, rugby shorts and shoes ended up hoisted the flagpole. Cling film appeared over bogs, and bog doors were locked from the inside etc etc. Not surprisingly, John and Eric’s door was firmly locked that morning. However, John received a soaking from Glip once he did get up.
After breakfast, we had flagbreak and a Scouts Own and then a game. We then played an April Fools’ Day treasure hunt on one patrol (including John Pow) which resulted in me being placed head first in a sink of water.
During the day, we had a blindfold estimation walk with plenty of cheating, as well as a lean-back wheelbarrow relay race.
In the afternoon, the kites were tried out but were a dismal failure. The highest kites were those placed on long poles, sand piles, flagpoles and trees.
A monster blindfold rope trail proved surprisingly popular with the Scouts and Cubs.
Afterwards, Glip drove the van back with Jonathan to catch the ferry and reached headquarters just as KWP etc arrived. We unloaded and dropped off the van.
